For years, I have warned that Australia’s vulnerability is that we don’t have enough sovereign capability or stock of critical resources. We rely heavily on imports, which is shipped to us via the South China Sea, which China claims as its own. Given the fortification of the islands in the South China Sea that China has claimed to be its own, China could close traffic including Australia’s and the world’s trade going north to south throughout the South China Sea.
